ABOUT THE EVENT Pecha Kucha, the Japanese term for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), began in Tokyo back in 2003. Conceived by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, their original goal was to create a space where designers could share their ideas/passions with others. However, knowing how dangerous it is to give a designer a microphone, they decided to put some checks in place. In order to keep speakers from droning on and on, a Pecha Kucha presentation has 2 key stipulations: 1) The presentation must contain only 20 slides. 2) Each slide is on display for 20 seconds each. Because of this constraint every Pecha Kucha presentation, regardless of speaker or topic, is exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds in length. Given this presentation style, we are able to accord time to 4 speakers on this evening, each delivering short, concise and (hopefully) entertaining presentations on 4 different Quality related subjects. Each presentation will be immediately followed by a Q&A session, in order for audience members to engage in a dialog regarding the topic presented. YOUR SPEAKERS FOR THE EVENING WILL BE: Veronica Marquez, Operations Management and Cont. Improvement (Consultant) PRESENTATION: Slack: A Path To Get Through Disturbances SYNOPSIS: Organizations are working hard to remove waste, cut costs and generate higher profits and cashflow. In doing so, we create lean and agile teams that are able to handle several elements and events throughout the day. But how much cutting is too much? Can being too lean harm an organization? At a time where advances in technology create a hyper dynamic marketplace, making the simplest decisions and implementing the changes become more and more time sensitive. In performing research, our presenter discovered the impact of slack in an organisation, its forms and its benefits when going through disturbances from the marketplace. Do you have the slack you need to get through the day? BIO: Veronica Marquez, business woman with 20+ years’ experience in Canadian and multinational organizations, specializes in operations management and continuous improvement. She began her career in distribution companies where she held various roles. These experiences have led her to do business locally, nationally and internationally. Noticing that she had gained a systemic and holistic view of business, she became interested in continuous improvement and obtained the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification within the organization where she worked and later, the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification with the American Society of Quality (ASQ). She has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Concordia University, a Certificate in Innovation Management as well as a Master of Science in Operations Management from HEC Montreal. Dubravka Kusmic, QA Manager (WECO Electrical Connectors Inc.) PRESENTATION: Business in Nouvelle France in 18th Century, and ISO 9001 Principles SYNOPSIS: These days, we are talking about good business practices; we are exchanging our experience with ISO 9001:2015 applications. How about pioneers in Nouvelle France 300 years ago? Some of them are completely forgotten, such as Mme. Agathe de Saint-Père de Repentigny who became a major figure in Canadian business life in 18th century. She engaged in the fur trade, agriculture and the textile industry. She also developed a new form of textile, which she presented to the king, was given a patent for, and had manufactured and sold. That said, would she pass an ISO 9001 audit? BIO: Dubravka Kusmic graduated in 1975 from the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina, ex-Yugoslavia) with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. She is an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and member of the OIQ. She has worked in manufacturing of electrical components for military and automotive industry, mostly testing, approvals and reliability studies. She was a member of IEC committee TC48 for Yugoslavia: Electromechanical components for electronic equipment. She immigrated to Canada during the civil war in Bosnia. She has worked for WECO Electrical Connectors Inc. since 1994 as: Assembler, QC Inspector, Reliability Engineer and QA Manager. Mutair Kadiri, Risk Management Manager (Canadian National Railway) PRESENTATION: Supplier Production Readiness in Aerospace SYNOPSIS: The Aerospace industry is growing fast, as more low cost travel, economic growth and increased tourism has boosted the demand for more airplanes. Many of the world airplane manufacturers rely heavily upon suppliers, which are thus racing to increase volumes to satisfy competing customers. There is the need for coordination and preparedness necessary amongst the suppliers and customers to meet increased demand. Production Rate Readiness (PRR), Manufacturing Readiness Review (MRR) or Supplier Rate Readiness Review (SRRR) is the primary key to ensure that there is a process to verify that a supplier has an effective, efficient and controlled process which will meet the customer's production and quality requirements. This is done by performing onsite assessment at the suppliers or sub-tiers. Follow up on risks and issues identified and put together as a Rolling Action Item List (RAIL) after the assessment with the risk owner, mitigation plans, due dates and frequent follow up to avoid impacting the customers schedule, delivery and cost. BIO: Mutair Kadiri is a Risk Management Manager at Canadian National Railway (CN). He is an Industrial Engineer and a Quality Systems Engineer with over 18 years of experience in quality engineering, continuous improvement, project management, manufacturing, production and consulting. He is a Professional Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO). He holds two Master degrees: one in Industrial and Production Engineering from University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and the other in Quality Systems Engineering from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He is a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) with the ASQ. He is the Director of the engineering consulting firm Eminence Summit Inc. Raymond Dyer, AQP/Quality Assurance Specialist (SDP Telecom) PRESENTATION: "ISO 9001:2015 Internal Audits Made Easy" (Fourth Edition by Ann W. Phillips) Reviewed in < 7 minutes! SYNOPSIS: "ISO 9001:2015 Internal Audits Made Easy" was recommended to the presenter by an ASQ colleague, Robert Demers, who is currently Section 401 chair and a well versed QMS auditor. He really enjoyed and appreciated reading this book, so much so that he decided it merited a Pecha Kucha. He'll provide an overview of the contents of Ann W. Phillips's book and then provide some feedback as to its value. He will also challenge a few statements she made on the ISO 9001 Internal Audit Process. The real challenge is to do this in less than 7 minutes! BIO: Raymond Dyer is an AQP/QA Specialist for Molex Canada Ltd. (Montreal Site), as well as ASQ Montreal Section 0401 Nominating Chair & Historian. He has a BSc in Biochemistry, MBA in Strategic Management, Post MBA Graduate Certificate in Management. He has over 36 years of experience in complex industries including Design of RF and Microwave components, Special Processes, Contract Manufacturing, Aerospace, Telecommunications, Hazardous Chemicals, and Explosives. He has held positions in product development and management, purchasing, and quality management. He has conducted various work related training sessions and lectured at HEC Montréal. An ASQ Member since 1993, ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) since 1996, ASQ Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) since 1997, and senior member since 2001. He has held several positions on the ASQ Montreal Section 0401 Leadership Team since 1993. *****************************************

A Word
from
your Section Chair
ISO Certification Drop: Myth or Reality? Doing a little research on the web, you find all kind of things. Some articles state that ISO certifications are dropping in numbers over the years. This chart from the managers of the standards (ISO.org) demonstrates a drop in demand. The increase in the other standards may be the reason for stagnation, but the question is "What happened in 2011?" The primary objective of certification is Preventing Escapes. Human nature is bound by asking for more and doing less. This new transition to 2015 is asking extra effort to comply. I still get mandates of COOs or QA Managers wanting me there for a while until the transition is over; they don’t have the time to do it. When I tell them that the new standard requires their engagement and that I will need their input, they don’t quite understand. Renewing certification is indeed a great moment to look at the structure and decide to merge certificates. This will automatically lead to a lower number of certificates. Of course there are now other management system standards that may actually be more appropriate and useful. It is a single example and anecdotal, but a company that works closely with Microsoft to implement cloud services and migrate existing data (ex. from Office to Office 365 and Exchange to Exchange Online) are certified to ISO 27001 and ISO 20000-1, but not ISO 9001, which makes complete sense because those certifications are directly relevant to their business. The rise of the specialized certifications (ex. AS, TS, 13485, etc.) is still growing at 15-20% annually in Asia. In Holland they have country and market specific certificates which are based on the ISO 9001. I'd say it's about the proliferation of other standards, and sadly, also the poor quality of audits that drives disengagement with 9001 (see my previous article on audit). There are companies dropping their ISO 9001:2008 certifications, claiming, among other factors: reduction of cost, no time to do the transition, and unmotivated to the process. On the other side, there are also uncertified companies willing to implement ISO 9001:2015 because of its potentiality. For this matter I am going on a qualification audit of a new car transmission plant next week to certify for the first time a 900+ employee’s plant running on 3 shifts. Take it the way you want. The new 2015 version of the standard adds little cost if done sensibly. I have done many transitions and implementations in companies so far and I can do it in less than 40 hours; the period of time depends on the help I get from the inside. Neither stakeholder nor risk analysis or knowledge management requires special documented information. I have even made my own templates for risk management. The issue is not the cost of standard, rather the benefit and usefulness of one! ISO 9001 is not the magic wand for solving problems! ISO 9001:2015 is built from great intentions, but will only be as good as it is practiced in the majority of companies. As for the slowdown in 2011, there is no research into why companies cancelled. Thus, unfortunately, no hard evidence can be found. Whether or not a slowdown will happen after 2018 we will have to see. I don't see (B2B) customers getting less stringent in their requirements of suppliers. The only businesses that won't keep their certifications are the ones whose customers don't have the requirement. Besides customer requirements, the best reason to maintain certification, is to ensure accountability for procedural adherence in your operation. It's kind of like law enforcement: if you get rid of the police, how long would it take for people to start speeding and breaking laws they deem non-essential or amoral? And if you hire someone to audit, train, consult or transition, who does not work for an "accredited" Certification Body, you are using an uncalibrated tool. Don't waste money on someone who doesn't really know what certification bodies require! And just don’t only certify to add another certificate on your wall of fame. 682 words |

By
Gordon Ayotte, ASQ Director, CQE, CQM, CSSBB
Had you come . . . Continuous Improvement at the MCH On
Wednesday, October 25th, the ASQ Section 401 held a meeting
where the General Assembly took place, followed by a presentation on
Continuous Improvement at the Montreal’s Children Hospital by
Dr. Sasha Dubrovski.
Dr. Sasha Dubrovski did a wonderful job of presenting a project he led on Continuous Improvement at the hospital. This project looked at % Asthmatic children in distress receiving timely steroids. This initiative covered the Six domains of quality in healthcare: •Safe
•Family-centered •Equitable •Effective •Efficient •Timely The basic tools of continuous improvement tools, such as the Six Sigma DMAC approach, 5W, SWOT, and a Process Maps, were used to name a few, and the importance of effective communications was also addressed. Dr. Dubrovski also shared with the group his experience with the different dynamics between various Stakeholders and how Coalition and Partnership plays an important role in these kinds of projects. Raising awareness of the issues first, and then measure performance was the approach taken with the multi-disciplinary team, including family advisory teams that went through the basic steps: Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing of the evolution of a team. |

Executive
Committee Meetings & Officers
Section Executive
Committee
(Leadership Team) Meetings are held at different locations, starting at
6 PM. The next regular meeting is tentatively scheduled for: December
6, 2017 Consult the List of Your Executive
for
2017 here 15. CertificationIs Your Recertification Due?Look at your wallet card to see when your present certification is due to expire. If it says December 31, 2016 you should contact ASQ by phone at 1-800-248-1946 and explain your situation to them because your certification has lapsed and you are no longer certified. If your wallet card states June 2017 you have until December 31, 2017 to get your journal to me or ASQ. Why so long? Because you have an expiration date of June 30, 2017 plus or minus six months. If you can't find this information please send me an email and I can find out for you. To assist you with documenting your Recertification Units (RU) please use the electronic Recertification Journal, or a paper equivalent, to document your claims if you are certifying through your section. Please also complete the "Documentation Required" log for each section of points that you are claiming and attach all of the relevant evidence thereto. Journals with just the "ASQ Recertification Journal Application" page completed and nothing else will not be accepted. ASQ Approved RECERTIFICATION JOURNAL Please do not send your journal to me by email. Maybe you’ve decided not to recertify because (a) you are unemployed, (b) no longer in the quality field or perhaps, (c ) your employer no longer will pay for it? Think about this, your certification belongs to you and no one else. Your name is on it and no one else’s. It is portable and you can bring the recognition to your next company. Remember how hard you had to study for it? If you let it lapse without a valid reason you must rewrite the exam. Do you know where you will be employed in a year or so? Well congratulations if you do because most of us don’t and it could come in handy then, besides that it sure won’t hinder you to retain it. The cost at to renew one certification is much less than it would be to rewrite. If you are unemployed then contact ASQ directly at 1-800-248-1946. Ask for “Recertification” then explain your unemployment situation to them. You may be able to have your due date extended. The cost of renewal is not really that much if it will help land your next job? If you are a member of Section 0401, Montreal then contact me (Norman) at certification@asqmontreal.qc.ca to find out where to send your journal. If you are NOT a member of section 401 then contact ASQ directly at 1-800-248-1946. Again: Please DO NOT EMAIL your journal to me. Use Canada Post or equivalent. |
